Exp 2 Week 5 and Final Submission

Independent Study

Strategy statement My strategy for interactively portraying the notion of decay was to firstly present a decayed structure but also to suggest that it is breakable by hiding chunks that evidently belong there. The second way I intended to present decay was to dramatasize the idea of humanity on the brink of oblivion with the Barcelona Pavilion being the last remaining human artefact falling off the cliff piece by piece while being consumed by nature which camouflages it.

Lecture reflection Jeremy's lecture was really interesting as i had now idea that gaming engines like UDK could be used to manage data, it was so innovative and really quite fascinating, overall this course has innovated the use of gamin engines and made me want to go further into the field into the future.

Exp 2 Week 4

Task for Today

Blend layers based on sketches.

Independant Study

I Am Legend
Looks at abandonement has amazing graphics and action scenes.

Narnia
Lotes of wide shots and fluid pans to accentuate the computer generated landscapes.

Inception
Surreal imagery, fluid motion.

Minority Report
Futuristitic lanscapes, action shots, flying things!

Shutter Island
Great shots of landscape incorporated into the mysterious plot, very sublime and bordering on surreal.

These trailers have inspired me to make use of trackview and do lots of clean wide circular panning shots if the scenes in my trailer ti create a cinematic effect.

Lecture Reflection

The Lecture focused on Decay of textures and provided a creative insight into how to destroy brand new textures in a realistic way. It also demonstrated the importance of blend layers in creating variety in textures which is important for a realistic look.

Exp 2 Week 3

Task for Today
3 sketches of my abandoned Barcelona pavilion

Marble only crack and break under stress but since my structure in on a cliff exposed to heavy winds, large chunks have chipped away and in is covered in algae with plants growing from the pool turned pond. The marble chunks hanging off the cliff will break off.

Progress with RayFire

My progress and intended direction

My plan is to end human life though the dramatic melting of polar ice caps caused by global warming and accelerated by a change in ocean current, resulting in a giant tsunami that floods the earth. I erodes away at the cliff that Barcelona pavilion stands on resulting in the building resting right on the edge of the cliff within a hundred years, I thought this would have a cool apocalyptic effect with the ideas of the last remnant of human existence resting on the peripheral of oblivion.

Lecture Reflection
This weeks lecture was awesome! the RayFire destruction video was incredible and being a media production student this new way of utilizing modelling plugins to create special effects was eye opening. It will also make it a lot easier to destroy our houses.

Exp 2 Week 2

Task for Today
Result of bump and spec maps applied to geometry.

After

Independent Study
So I figured out how to use 3ds Max, it's way easier than I thought and I've modeled  Barcelona Pavilion as you can see.

How Materials Decay
Marble Studies show marble tends to fracture and chip over time. Marble react to acid rain which corrodes the material. Gypsum is one of the elements found in marble. over time a type of fungi known as patina forms in the crack between gypsum crystals. Patina takes the form of a black crust. Uneven distribution of stress in materials like marble also leads to the forming of cracks which is a common structural failure in marble over time.

Steel Steel has a passive film coating that prevents the metal from rusting, however, over time the film wears away especially if it isn't maintained which is the case in Exp 2. The unprotected iron when exposed will undergo a chemical reaction we know as rusting. Metals contain free electrons which are transferred when in contact with one another this reaction leaves behind a crusty substance (for iron the substance is known as rust. If a steel column is more maintained for a long time it would look like this.

The poled in Barcelona Pavilion would also be slightly eroded over 100 year, however the level of erosion depends on environmental conditions.here is a case of extreme erosion.

Glass There are several ways that glass will break down and decay over time depending on environmental factors. Glass cannot withstand extremely high or low temperatures which makes it crack and crystallise. High wind and other environmental factor will weaken the fractures causing the cracking and breaking of glass or accelerating it. Without, maintenance, glass near the ocean is exposed to salty air forms a thick white crust which enhances the crystallisation process.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
This weeks lecture looked at a number of things including materials used in construction and how they break down. This prompted me to think about what material I will be using for Barcelona and how they decay over time and provided an interesting insight into what my final project might look like.

Exp 2 Week 1

Task for Today
Result of exporting an object from Max to cryENGINE.

Independent Study
Exporting more objects:

The Houses
Rudin House The concept behind the design is the idea of the icon of a house one would associate with in their childhood. The main material of the house is concrete which covers all the other elements to create an illusion that it is made purely of concrete.

Barcelona pavilion The concept behind the design was to be an architectural portrait of Weimar Germany. the building was intended to be a 'zone of tranquility'.

House of Bordeaux The house has three distinct levels and is meant to be 3 houses morphed into one. The main materials of the house include cement, glass and aluminium.

Lecture reflection
The lecture introduced the three houses we can choose from and provided insight on how they may decay which is important as this is what we are exploring in our assessment. Russell also showed us examples of civilisations that have been abandoned such as Hashima Island and how buildings decay and nature slowly consumes them.

Week 6

I was absent for the tut and unable to do the group task

The lecture provided us with knowledge on how to film which I otherwise had no clue of and hopefully with track view filming will be a breeze.

The lecture provided some insightful advice into how to use Track view and animate, very useful.
